Pinin' for the Sea
Funny, that. Not too far off from the time that my dad was ogling that lovely sloop, I was sitting in the cafe at Balmoral beach with Penny. I must have been a horrible conversationalist, and my apologies, Penny, because as I slurped my cappuccino, my eyes were glued to the bright blue of the harbour. The wind had picked up on Sunday and was toying with all the bright white sails out on the water, and I couldn't help but watch and pine from the boring safe old cafe.
That Monday on the way to work I took out my little Moleskine notebook that I bought so I could write things on public transport and get people to think I'm a cool writer person.
This is what I scribbled in the 10 minutes between Newtown and Town Hall.
So hard to get started writing again... So much inertia. But I remember yesterday sitting with Penny in the cafe on Balmoral beach, drinking coffee and looking out over the water at the sailboats. Longing for the sea and a boat of my own-- that utter rush when you're moving over the waves, even if it's only at 3 knots-- I must have been a boring conversationalist. I kept remembering that stupid scene from Titanic with Kate & Leo at the bow of the boat: "I'm king of the world!" Boot Leo overboard and just listen to the wind roar, there is no world, there is only the cold air battering your face, making your eyes water; there's only the salt spray exploding in your nose. There's only that adrenaline rush surfing down into the trough of a wave.
It's been too cold for the beach. But I've still got a yen for the sea.
